The 200 ft. passenger steamer, The Westmoreland, foundered off the coast of northern Michigan in 1854, loaded with a rumored cargo of gold and whiskey. For years the ship lay undiscovered at the bottom of the lake. At least a dozen diving expeditions were unsuccessful until the summer of 2010, when Benzie County resident Ross Richardson discovered it during a solo dive.

The Historical Society invites you to spend an evening hearing Mr. Richardson's tales of the legend, the history and the discovery of The Westmoreland, including a media presentation to accompany his talk. He has spent the last ten years searching for and documenting shipwrecks off the coast of western Michigan, working with Clive Cussler's NUMA Team (National Underwater and Marine Agency), Dave Trotter, and the Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates. His popular programs have taken him all over the Great Lakes area, from the Ghost Ships Festival in Milwaukee to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Festival in Ann Arbor.

Amanda Strickfaden, Allen Philley, Mandi Landstra, and Marilyn Boyce were the guides and gave a terrific tour. The children (and the adult chaperones) all seemed to really enjoy themselves, and asked a LOT of questions, some of which baffled some of our guides.

This was Mandi's first tour and she handled it like a trooper, of course it helps that she is a child at heart. Mandi took the main floor and kept the tour moving along nicely, even telling stories along the way.

Allen handled the area that most kids want to see the most, the Jail. It seemed like everyone learned a lot from Allen as lots of "ooh's" and "aah's" could be heard from the main floor.

Marilyn took the basement, and prepared for it by removing the gavel from the judges bench (do you blame her?). Several comments were heard about her "authentic wardrobe". Good job Marilyn!

Amanda (who took time on her birthday to give the tour) tackled the upstairs, and organized the whole tour.
